Frank Vincent Zappa (Dec 21, 1940 - Dec 4, 1993)

Note on artist credits:

From 1966 to 1969 Frank Zappa was the leader of "The Mothers of Invention", and all albums from this period were originally credited as such (with the exception of 1967's "Lumpy Gravy" LP which is credited to "Frank Zappa.") From 1970-1973, Zappa and his revolving cast of backup musicians alternated releasing albums under the names "Frank Zappa" and the simplified moniker "The Mothers." In 1974-75 Zappa released a couple albums using the hybrid name "Frank Zappa and the Mothers", then finally from 1976 on all of his records were simply credited to "Frank Zappa." The artist names used on this week's playlist follow the names used on the original LP releases.

However because Zappa maintained ownership of his master recordings (with the exception of the "200 Motels" soundtrack), all of the various albums released over the years under permutations of "The Mothers (of Invention)" have since been reissued on CD under the name "Frank Zappa."

Here is a partial list of some of the key Mothers from the 1966-75 period:

  • Frank Zappa (lead guitar, vocals, compositions & arrangements 1966-75)
  • Roy Estrada (bass & falsetto vocals 1966-69)
  • Jimmy Carl Black AKA "The Indian of the group" (drums 1966-69)
  • Ray Collins (lead vocals 1966-68)
  • Jim "Motorhead" Sherwood (roadie / tambourine & baritone sax 1966-69)
  • Bunk & Buzz Gardner (reeds 1967-69)
  • Don Preston (keyboards & electronics 1967-72)
  • Ian Underwood (keyboards & reeds 1967-74)
  • Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman AKA "Flo & Eddie" (lead vocals 1970-71)
  • Aynsley Dunbar (drums 1970-74)
  • George Duke (keyboards & vocals 1970-75)
  • Ruth Underwood (xylophone & percussion 1972-75)
