"A Whole New Thing" by Sly & The Family Stone
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sly & The Family Stone "A Whole New Thing" 1967 (USA)
The first recordings of the Family Stone (before Sister Rose had even joined), this album sold diddley when first released, but charted in 1970 after Sly had conquered the pop world and Woodstock Nation (the cover at left is the reissue version).  But then in his prime, Sly was always ahead of his time.  He was one of the great natural geniuses of his era -- a brilliant singer, songwriter, musician, bandleader, arranger and showman -- everything he recorded with The Family Stone up through at least 1973 is classic stuff. It's hard to believe this music is nearly 40 years old! (But then again, riffs sampled from this album have recently been the basis for major hits by Fatboy Slim and LL Cool J . . .)
