"Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirlybirds" by Randy California (1972)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Randy California "Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds"  1972 (USA)
Randy Wolfe had his first serious gig playing second guitar with "Jimmy James & The Blue Flames" when he was just a teenager.  It was then that he acquired the name "California" to differentiate him from another Randy in the band who came from Texas.  In 1966 "Jimmy James" split for London where he had huge success under the name "Jimi Hendrix."  But Randy's parents wouldn't let him go along, so he returned home and founded the pioneering jazz-rock band Spirit with his stepfather Ed Cassidy on drums.  After leaving Spirit in the early 1970's, California launched a solo career with this gonzo guitar LP, which features on bass one "Clit McTorious" -- actually Hendrix's old bass player Noel Redding!  The album features mostly cover songs by the Beatles, Paul Simon and James Brown, played in a style that's much closer to Hendrix than Spirit.
