The Self Indulgent Birthday show
(Sir Paul McCartney and your host Dave 3000 share a birthday)
Bobby Conn's self-titled debut album (1997)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Bobby Conn "Bobby Conn" 1997 (USA)
Bobby Conn burst upon the Chicago scene in the late 1990's proclaiming himself to be the antichrist here to rule all once Y2K unleashed the world revolution, a thesis most brilliantly stated on the two versions of his debut album (the limited edition vinyl version features a couple terrrific non-CD tracks and vice versa).  After 2000 came and went, he admitted he might not be the antichrist after all, and his style shifted from apocalyptic to decadent paranoia, culminating in his 2004 masterpiece, The Homeland.  His musical style is an absurd amalgamation of punk, metal, glam, tropicalia, psychedelia, turnatablism, and performance art.  Full disclosure:  one of my few claims to rocknroll fame is that I was in a band that opened for Bobby three times back in 1996, before his first album came out!  Official Website.  Myspace site with videos from Bobby's latest album.
"For Ladies Only" by Killdozer (1988)
2nd BONUS CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK!
Killdozer "For Ladies Only" 1988 (USA)
Since this is my annual birthday show, I decree that we shall have two Classic Albums of the Week.  Killdozer is arguably Madison, Wisconsin's most legendary band.  They perfected the grunge sound years before the Melvins or any of those Seattle bands even formed (and their producer Butch Vig went on to helm Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins' breakthrough albums in the early 90's.)  Their 1988 "all seventies classic rock" covers LP is just about the greatest covers albums of all time, and also one of the funniest rock albums ever recorded!  The genius is that they play these Steve Miller Band and James Gang "classics" straight-faced, as if they were Killdozer originals.  The band broke up in the late 90's after shedding most of the original members over the years, but they recently reunited for the Touch & Go 25 Year Anniversary concert.
