"There's A Riot Goin' On" by Sly & The Family Stone (1971)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sly & The Family Stone  "There's A Riot Goin' On"  1971 (USA)
Family Stone records had always been a party up until the release of this record, which pretty much invented the "downer soul" subgenre and marks the transition from 60's optimism to 70's nihilism as well as any music from its era.  I find it's usually easier to write about the merely "great" records than the true "masterpieces", and this one is a perfect example.  Musically, lyrically and emotionally this album is as deep as the ocean and just as murky.  I couldn't even tell you what these songs are "about", they seem to bypass the conscious mind entirely as provacative phrases like "feel so good, don't wanna move" emerge from the hazy funk and lodge themselves in your soul forever.
Amazing live clip of the Family Stone before Sly got "heavy".
