Neil Young "Time Fades Away" (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Neil Young  "Time Fades Away"  1973 (Canada)
Neil Young turns 63 on November 12, so this month on Kosmik Radiation we are celebrating with a six hour Neil special!  Only two of Young's LP's have never been reissued during the CD era, those being this classic live album from 1973 and the Journey Through The Past movie soundtrack from 1972.  Nobody is exactly clamoring for the the soundtrack to be reissued (it consists of a couple live CSNY cuts, recycled Buffalo Springfield, and outtakes from Harvest.)  However Time Fades Away is a legendary release that marked both the beginning of Neil's self-imposed exile from the pop charts and his infamous "ditch trilogy" of incredibly depressing albums (On The Beach and Tonight's The Night being the other installments.)  When this record was recorded, two of his close friends had just died of heroin overdoses (Crazy Horse leader Danny Whitten and CSNY roadie Bruce Berry), and he was writing new songs while drowning his sorrows in a whole lot of tequilla.  And so on the biggest tour of his initial rise to stardom, Neil sounds totally wasted and can barely sing in tune -- which makes for a slab of pure, unvarnished rock and roll.  This is as real as Neil gets folks!
Here are a few classic Neil clips from the vaults:  "The Needle And The Damage Done" and "Old Man" are classic solo acoustic numbers.   Neil's star rose fast in the early 70's due to his joining the supergroup Crosby Stills Nash & Young, who performed Young tunes such as "Down By The River" and "Southern Man" (featuring classic guitar duels by Young and Stephen Stills.)  Virtually alone among his sixties peers, Neil Young has remained contemporary and "relevant" -- here's his era-defining anthem "Rockin' In The Free World" from 1990, and a more recent political song "The Restless Consumer" from his 2006 album Living With War.
