"More Songs About Buildings And Food" by Talking Heads (1978)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Talking Heads  "More Songs About Buildings And Food"  1978 (USA)
This week's pledge drive special features all music played off of old fashioned vinyl records.  When I was first buying albums as a teen in the mid-1980's, Talking Heads was just about the coolest band on the planet, and in the decades since they broke up their reputation hasn't diminished at all.  Though originally associated with punk rock, Talking Heads real innovation was their fusion of funk and world music with rock and roll (plus of course David Byrne's notoriously eccentric songs and persona.)  Although the group never made a bad album, the run of recordings they made with Brian Eno producing is generally considered to be their peak period.  The first of the Eno albums was their sophomore release, the humourously titled More Songs About Buildings And Food, which also yielded their first hit single in a cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River".  Eno's next two productions Fear Of Music and especially Remain In Light are also masterpieces, as is the 1981 album My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts credited to the duo of David Byrne and Brian Eno.
Here's some ancient footage of the band playing "Take Me To The River" live in 1978.  And here's a classic from their debut album: "Psycho Killer" live in 1978.  Before long Talking Heads added a number of musicians (including Adrian Belew from King Crimson and the Zappa band, and P-Funk keyboard wizard Bernie Worrell) and they morphed into a funky big band, as seen in this clip of "Houses In Motion" live in 1980.  Finally here's Brian Eno years before hooking up with the Heads, as a member of Roxy Music in 1972.
