UFO  "UFO 2 Flying (One Hour Space Rock)"  1971 (UK)
A mysterious unidentified flying object flew over Wisconsin on April 14!  (I saw the flash of light out the window that night . . . )  It turned out to be "merely" a (particularly spectacular) meteor, and that inspired me to pull out this classic slab of heavy psych for this week's CAOTW.  UFO played a neanderthal version of Zeppelin-inspired heavy blues rock on their debut album, but for their second long player they stretched out with a pair of epic 20 minute tracks to produce "one hour space rock."  Rather than virtuostic muso wankery, the band's "space rock" has a primitive/minimalist approach reminiscent of heavier "kraut" groups like Ash Ra Tempel or NEU!, only more crudely recorded and played with the idiot gusto of The Stooges.
Here's UFO as naked sweaty barbarians playing the single from this album, "Prince Kajuku".  And here's another psychedelic clodhopper by the original lineup, "Boogie" (1970).  Later on the band added guitarist Michael Schenker (ex-Scorpions) and went in a much more "heavy metal" direction: "Rock Bottom" (1975).  And just for fun, here's a groovy ancient clip of Schenker with Scorpions (1972).
