We're FREAKING OUT for this month's special -- that means freeform epic jams of wild pspontaneous psychedelic abandon!  And perhaps the most pure and truly out-there "freakout record" was this notorious gem from Hapshash & The Coloured Coat (graphic artist hipsters having a lark), who went on to make some more conventional recordings without "The Human Host & The Heavy Metal Kids" (whoever they were!)  But this first LP sounds exactly like what it was:  a bunch of freaks tripping in a recording studio with the tape rolling.  Fortunately there were a couple ringers in the bunch (actual musicians), and the resulting mayhem was well mixed & edited.  At times danceable, beautiful, ridiculous and scary -- it really is a trip!
Here are some "fan videos" for tracks from the first Hapshash LP, "H. O. P. P. Why?" the funky leadoff track, and the far-out "New Messiah Coming".  And here's one from their more conventional follow up Western Flyer:  "The Wall".
But clearly what popularized this whole "freaking out" business was the debut album by The Mothers of Invention from 1966, which was entitled Freak Out! and included various instructions on how to freak out (musically and otherwise) -- here's a very groovy period piece of that album's "Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet" from Dutch TV in 1967.
