"In For The Kill" by Budgie (1974)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Budgie  "In For The Kill"  1974 (UK-Wales)
Budgie is a great "second tier" British band from the first wave of heavy metal.  Their first two LP's were produced by Rodger Bain (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest), although their style always had some pub-friendly and even downright silly elements (particularly their taste for wacky song titles like "Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman" and "If I Were Brittania I'd Waive The Rules".)  Since I read recently that the group's founding bassist/singer Burke Shelley had to have emergency heart surgery, I figured it was time to induct another Budgie classic into the hall of fame -- In For The Kill was their fourth record, and is among their heaviest and best.
The most classic video of Budgie in action is this studio version of "Breadfan" from circa 1973 (one of their best-known songs since it was covered by Metallica.)  There isn't a whole lot more from back in the day, though here's a TV performance of "I Ain't No Mountain" from later in  the 1970's.  Shelley has kept Budgie in flight for all these years, as seen in this more recent clip of another classic headbanger "Melt The Ice Away".
We're also marking the passing of Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson this week, a member of the legendary graphic arts group Hipgnosis (who produced classic album covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and many others) and the pioneering industrial music groups Throbbing Gristle and Coil.  Here's Throbbing Gristle's "Six Six Sixties", and a bit of documentary on Coil.
