"Monster Movie" by The Can (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Can  "Monster Movie"  1969 (Germany)
Holger Czukay ("CHOO-kai") just turned 73 years old this week -- he was the bassist (and many would say leader) of The Can:  legendary "krautrock" group, and indeed one of the greatest "jam bands" of all time.  In their initial formation, this iconic quartet of academically-trained German musicians was joined by the uniquely loopy American singer Malcolm Mooney -- resulting in a debut album which sounds like Karlheinz Stockhausen guiding The Velvet Underground through a series of James Brown riffs!  Can's classic combination of psychedelic garage rock with funky grooves and electronic experimentation has been incredibly influential on underground music ever since (The Fall, Talking Heads, Public Image, Sonic Youth and Stereolab just to name a few obvious examples -- even Radiohead covered a Can song, and Kanye West has sampled them!)
I don't believe Can was ever filmed when Malcolm Mooney was in the band, but here's birthday boy Holger Czukay hosting a short documentary on the original Can, and some live clips from the 1970's with their second singer Damo Suzuki: "Paperhouse" from the Beat Club TV show, and "Bring Me Coffee Or Tea" live in the studio.  Also on the show this week, yet another listener request for Neil Young.
