Peacepipe (aka The Human Equation)  "Jon Uzonyi's Peacepipe"  rec. 1968-69, rel. 1995 (USA)
It's pledge drive time at WORT-FM, and this week also happens to mark the Kosmik Radiation show's 1000th hour on the air!  One of my favorite things to do on the show is to highlight obscure artists from the past -- sure everyone loves the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc. -- but have you heard about Pink Fairies or Simply Saucer?  In that spirit, one of the most impressive lost recordings of the 1960's is this 1995 CD release collecting up the recordings of Jon Uzonyi (guitar), Gary Tsuruda (drums) and Rick Abts (electric organ).  The only music this group released back in the day was an obscure 7" single -- "The Sun Won't Shine Forever" b/w "Lazy Sunday Blues" -- released in 1968 and credited to "Peacepipe" (which was actually just teenagers Uzonyi and Tsuruda overdubbing all the instruments themselves!)  The bass-less trio with Abts gigged around the west coast through 1969-70 under the name "The Human Equation", which is how they were best known at the time.  They also recorded an album's worth of classic heavy psychedelia which went unreleased for 25 years:  this week's classic album.
There is no video of this band, but here are fan clips for the first Peacepipe single "The Sun Won't Shine Forever" and another track from the unreleased 1969 sessions "A Biker's Tune".  Some other legendary underground groups featured on the show this week include Australia's The Coloured Balls (who were the missing link between 60's hippie festival rock and the classic "Aussie guitar boogie" style later perfected by AC/DC and Rose Tattoo);  the Canadian jazz-rock fusion band Mashmakhan;  and the Chicago group named after cult horror writer H. P. Lovecraft.
