Celebrating 7 Years of Kosmik Radiation!
Thanks for listening!

"Trilogy" by Emerson Lake & Palmer (1972)

CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Emerson Lake & Palmer  "Trilogy"  1972 (UK)
This week is the seventh anniversary of the Kosmik Radiation show's debut on the radio.  So the Classic Album this week is my favorite album by one of my favorite guilty pleasures.  ELP was one of the most tremendously popular and successful progressive rock bands during the years 1970-1974, selling out stadiums around the globe and moving millions of LP's.  At the time, their devotion to cutting-edge technology, spectacular stage shows and virtuoso musicianship made them seem like the "future of rock".  However, the styles changed and ELP limped off the stage in the late-1970's performing bombastic light classical pieces and dreadful "adult contemporary" tunes as the group flailed to find a new direction in a world dominated by disco, punk and new wave.  Call me a weirdo if you will, but I find the artists who "failed" are often more interesting than the ones who succeeded.  ELP's music is incredibly gauche and over-the-top, and often dwarfed by the spectacular too-muchness of their lasers, computerized drum kits, synthesizer and amp stacks the size of small buildings, and even taking a full symphony orchestra out on tour (a move that lost them millions of dollars).  One thing you can certainly say about Emerson Lake & Palmer is that they did not lack ambition!  Which brings us to Trilogy,  perhaps the group's most perfect single LP, containing a catchy hit single ("From The Beginning"), their most ferocious classical adaptation ("Hoedown", based on a theme by Aaron Copland), and a 10+ minute suite about the creation of the universe and the meaning of life itself ("The Endless Enigma")!
The showstopper on this album is Emerson's classical keyboard rave-up "Hoedown" , played even faster in concert!  And here's the maestro Keith Emerson in more recent years jamming with another supergroup including the greatest bassist of them all John Entwistle (plus members of Doobie Brothers, Eagles and Toto!) -- on yet another Copland piece, "Fanfare For The Common Man".  Next the genial wizard Emerson shows off his vintage moog synthesizer, and Greg Lake performs Trilogy's hit single "From The Beginning".  Last but not least, here's Carl Palmer playing -- what else? a drum solo.
