CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Kraan "Kraan" 1972 (Germany)

This week's classic album is by what seems to have been one of Germany's more popular bands of the 1970's, though they are not often mentioned among the first rank of "krautrock" groups -- perhaps because Kraan's style incorporated a lot of prog and jazz fusion mixed up in an improvisational jam band style reminiscent of the Grateful Dead. Which is to say they were not really particularly experimental and forward-looking, but they did encapsulate the sounds of the times with a lot more taste and style than many of their peers. Which would explain why they are more popular in their homeland than globally celebrated underground groups like Can and NEU!
Here's a video of Kraan performing a song from their debut album in 1972, "Sarah's Ritt Durch Den Schwarzwald" ("Sarah's Ride Through The Black Forest") -- and a live clip from 1977 (with mimes, ugh!!) "Vollglas Ahoi" ("Full Glass Ahoy"). Kraan is still at it to this day as a power trio, here's the current Kraan live in 2011.
