"Unlimited Edition" by Can (1968-75)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Can  "Unlimited Edition"  rec. 1968-75, rel. 1976 (Germany/USA/Japan)
This year Can have released a new triple CD set of outtakes from their legendary 1970's "krautrock klassiks", called The Lost Tapes.  But it's not the first time they have delved into the vaults to dig up gems and oddities -- back in 1976 they released this week's classic compilation of the week.  Unlimited Edition features the first (and best) three lineups of the band:  the quintet with American loonie Malcolm Mooney on vocals (my favorite), the iconic quintet that recording Tago Mago with Damo Suzuki on lead vocals, and the underrated "all German quartet" with no lead singer (though everyone but the drummer eventually did a bit of singing on their 1974-76 albums).  They were Europe's greatest jam band (next week: America's greatest jam band!)
Here's a couple cuts from the newest collection of old Can: "Barnacles" and "The Dead Pigeon Tapes" .  And here's a look at the geeks behind the freeking:  the core quartet live on UK TV in 1975
