"Superfuzz Bigmuff" by Mudhoney (1988)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Mudhoney  "Superfuzz Bigmuff" EP  1988 (USA)
The roots of "grunge rock" lie in the early 1970's -- the fuzz of Sabbath, the heavy blooz of Zeppelin, the grit of Crazy Horse -- and in some corners of the 1980's underground, sludgy heavy riffy rock still had it's adherents (Melvins from Seattle and Killdozer from Madison being two of the most influential).  But the band that (for better or for worse) blazed the trail towards grunge was Mudhoney, another Seattle group that formed a bit late for the indie era (out of the ashes of Green River, whose other key members formed Pearl Jam).  Their sound is laregly a rehash of nasty post-nuggets / pre-punk heavy rock from circa 1970.  The most seminal and influential of Mudhoney's (rather simplistic) oeuvre is their first 7" single "Touch Me I'm Sick" / "Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More" and first EP Superfuzz Bigmuff (named after their guitar players' distortion pedals, get your mind out of the gutter!)  Their really is nowhere to go with this sort of dumb teenage stoner rawk (already 20 years out of date the first time around!), so they've largely been rehashing their early work ever since.  But on the other hand, the early stuff is so good that if they broke up after this record, today they might be as legendary as The Stooges!
Here's that classic first single "Touch Me I'm Sick" (the dawn of "grunge"!)  Though they were snapped up in the "Seattle sound" feeding frenzy of 1990, they never achieved the commercial success of peers like Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden.  But they did get to make music videos for MTV:  here's "Let It Slide" and "Suck You Dry".
