Joni Mitchell  "Ladies Of The Canyon"  1970 (Canada)
The legendary "queen of the hippies" Joni Mitchell (born Roberta Joan Anderson) turns 69 years old this week.  This Sasketchawanian lady began her career as a folk singer, but began to break through when other artists like Judy Collins and Buffy St. Marie began recording her songs.  In 1968, her pal David Crosby talked Reprise records into signing her as a solo artist.  By the time of this, her third album, the era of individualist singer-songwriters was well under way -- a trend she had more to do with creating than perhaps anyone other than Bob Dylan himself.
Here's Joni singing this album's biggest hit -- the enviro classic "Big Yellow Taxi".  The other well known tune from Ladies is "Woodstock" -- a song about the famous concert performed just 4 weeks after the event!  (The hit version of the song was done by her pals Crosby Stills Nash & Young.)  More folky delights can be found in this duet with Johnny Cash from his superhip TV show.  As the 1970's wore on, Joni moved in the direction of electric jazz fusion (believe it or not!) -- here's a tune from the end of that decade: "Shadows And Light".
