Neil Young's 67th Birthday
"Greendale" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse (2003)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Neil Young & Crazy Horse  "Greendale"  2003 (Canada/USA)
Neil Young turns 67 years "young" (hehe) on Monday November 12, and so we celebrate the last of the relevant and popular sixties rockers this week.  This past year has been a very good one indeed:  Neil won his first Grammy award for a tune from last year's Le Noise album, reunited with his greatest band Crazy Horse for TWO new albums and a tour (their first in about 15 years), AND has just published his first book, Waging Heavy Peace!  Though the truth is, aside from a brief spell from roughly 1983-87 (tough times for all sixties folk), Neil has been on a creative roll pretty much ever since first breaking onto the scene in 1966 with Buffalo Springfield.  He's made several fine albums this decade, but my favorite of his 21st century works is the 2003 "folk rock opera" Greendale.   Yes, that's right, this album is a story set to music -- in fact it's really more like an audio novel than an "opera", though Neil does (brilliantly) sing all the charaters' dialogue.  It really should be no surprise he would succeed at an ambitious project like this:  his father Scott Young was a highly respected author (very famous in Canada anyway).
Here's Neil performing "Bandit" from Greendale, and the "Sun Green" sequence from the movie version he made (under his cinematic psuedonym Bernard Shakey).  And here's Crazy Horse on tour in 2012 playing a tune from their latest album Psychedelic Pill: "Walk Like A Giant".  Finally, some clips of the greatest hippie goon soul punk band on the planet touring in the 1970's "Like A Hurricane", and in the 1990's "Hey Hey My My".
