"Eat A Peach" by The Allman Brothers Band (1972)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Allman Brothers Band  "Eat A Peach"  1972 (USA)
There were three big names at the dawn of the "jam band" phenomenon which began to flourish in the early 1970's:  The Grateful Dead (of course), The Band (Bob Dylan's pals) and The Allman Brothers.  Over the decades that followed, The Dead became the standard bearers while the other two groups fell by the wayside.   The Band never really lived up to their potential and broke up in 1976 (seemingly over ego clashes fueled by drugs), while the Allmans fell victim to the tragic deaths of two members, including their leader Duane Allman.  Though that didn't stop them (a version of ABB is still on tour to this day!), Duane's death did mark the end of the most classic era of the band.  Eat A Peach was the final record featuring Duane, begun before his death but not released until afterwards.  The bulk of the material on this double album consists of live recordings (this LP following on the heels of their breakthrough Live At The Fillmore East, one of the most highly regarded concert albums of all time), though it also has the last few studio tracks recorded with Duane and a side of songs recorded after his death (including Dicky Betts' masterful "Les Brers In A Minor").
Here's the original ABB live at the Fillmore East 1970, and a rare live video of "Mountain Jam" which appears on Eat A Peach.  And here's Duane & the gang on one more psychedelic Southern classic: "Dreams".  Also, here's the official video for "Driftin' Back" -- at over 27 minutes it is the longest song Neil Young has written yet!  Featured on the show this week and just released on the latest Crazy Horse album Psychedelic Pill!
