This week's show is dedicated to Mark Young R.I.P.
"Surrealistic Pillow" by Jefferson Airplane (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Jefferson Airplane  "Surrealistic Pillow"  1967 (USA)
Sadly, this week's show is a first for Kosmik Radiation -- a tribute to a recently deceased listener, Mark Young.  He was a volunteer at WORT-FM (working on the Healthwriters show), and a regular listener who called me during the program about 80% of the time over the past two or three years.  He would often make requests, frequently for Patti Smith's "Gloria" (his favorite song) but also for The Jefferson Airplane.  Mark told me more than once how his first hearing of this group was a life-changing and ear-opening experience.  I too am a huge fan of this band (though they are before my time), one of the truly "revolutionary" groups of the psychedelic era, so as tribute to Mark this week's classic album is the Jeffersons' best seller and most enduring LP -- their second release, which was the first record featuring the classic lineup of Marty, Grace, Paul, Jack, Jorma and Spencer.
Here's the band performing their two top ten hits at Woodstock, both of which are found on this album.  And here's a recent clip of Marty Balin in an intimate performance of "Comin' Back To Me", also from this album.  Finally, a culture clash from 1967:  The Airplane on American Bandstand with Dick Clark!
