"Wolf City" by Amon Düül II (1972)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Amon Düül II  "Wolf City"  1972 (Germany)
Amon Düül II was one of Germany's greatest bands, and during the "krautrock" era were one of the most popular groups outside of their native land.  The group featured two distinctive lead vocalists (male Christoph Karrer and female Renate Knaup-Krötenschwanz) ala the Jefferson Airplane, and an instrumental attack that could sound as huge as Led Zeppelin, as rifftastic as Black Sabbath, and as spaced-out as Pink Floyd.  Yet they maintained a "European" sound, image and attitude that was distinct from the Anglo-American groups which dominated their era.  Due to their relative success, they were also one of the most prolific German groups of their era -- Wolf City is but one of many classic albums they released during their heyday from 1969-1975.
Here's a live performance clip of "Surrounded By The Stars" from this album, and an earlier classic "Between The Eyes" from the very groovy German TV show Beat Club.   And here's a piece of a BBC documentary that puts the band in context -- and includes Renate's retelling of her encounter with the Bader-Meinhof gang!
