"Easter Everywhere" by The 13th Floor Elevators (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
13th Floor Elevators  "Easter Everywhere"  1967 (USA)
Roky Erickson is coming to town next week, on tour with The Black Angels. In the 1960's Roky (short for Roger Kynard and pronounced "Rocky") was the lead singer and lead guitarist of The 13th Floor Elevators, one of the very first psychedelic rock groups (their debut from 1966 was one of the first albums with "Psychedelic" in the title). Furthermore, the Elevators stood out because they hailed from Austin, the hippest town in the very conservative state of Texas. Easter Everywhere was their second, best, and in some ways final, album. A third and fourth record appeared in the following years, but they consisted of fake live recordings and unfinished tracks polished up with idiosyncratic horns and such. For the group ground to a halt in 1968 when Roky was diagnosed with schizophrenia and hospitalized for electroshock "treatments" (he kept trying to escape so was then incarcerated in another hospital for the "criminally insane.") His music career resumed in 1974, and he has been sporadically releasing music ever since. In recent years he has begun performing his old rock tunes with younger musicians, including the current tour with The Black Angels (Austin's top psychedelic group of the 21st century).
