- Tiger B. Smith "Tiger Rock" 1972 (Germany)
Tiger
B. Smith was a West German group of the early 1970's, but this is not
the "kosmische Musik" sound of "krautrock". Indeed, some may stereotype
the German music scene of this era based on latter-day interest in
groups like Can, Faust, Cluster, NEU!, etc. Actually, the German scene
was diverse and the most popular acts were groups like Jane, Birth
Control and (of course) der Scorpions - your basic early-70's classic
rock / hard rock sound. Tiger B. Smith (the name of a trio not a
person) took the added measure of adopting a glam caveman style of
music and dress that makes them an analog to "masculaine glitter"
groups like Alice Cooper, Slade, The Sweet and KISS. The group made two
album, the first is Tiger Rock
and it is a lost classic of 70's foot-stompin' troglodyte metal!
Produced by Dieter Dierks of Nektar, Ash Ra Tempel, etc. fame, whose
most successful act was those aforementioned Scorpions; and Tiger Rock
sounds at least as heavy as any Scorps albums (and was released the
same year as their first record). The second TBS LP We're The Tiger Bunch
is a more mixed affair that features shorter songs and a
less-heavy approach (it fails largely because it isn't tigerish enough!) |
