Hippie Xmas

"Deodato 2" by Eumir Deodato (1973)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Eumir Deodato  "Deodato 2"  1973 (Brazil/USA)
If you are a regular  listener of Kosmik Radiation, you have probably heard tracks from this albums dozens if not hundreds of times; it gets played on about 99% of my shows. For the past several years, Deodato 2 has been the album I have been using most as background music during air breaks (the bits when the DJ talks to you) , in particular the groovy fusion version of "Nights In White Satin" (starts with a moog and has a psychedelic breakdown in the middle) and two Deodato originals "Skyscrapers" (the one that starts with the funky bass) and "Super Strut" (the one that starts with the funky keyboard). It is "hippy xmas" in Madison today (traditionally downtown leases turn over on August 15 thus there are all sorts of furniture and "interesting junk" on the curbs meant for the trash but offering free goodies to thrifty "hippies" looking to score), which always inspires a KR show featuring my junkiest used vinyl oddities; this is also the final episode of Kosmik Radiation on Friday mornings 2-5am. Thus it seems like a perfect opportunity to induct this beauty (a gem of a junk bin album) and retire it from regular use (time to reboot the show! Also I am going to wear out the grooves on the best tracks on this sucker!) I don't know what really to say about this album other than: 1) it is on the CTI label, awesome source for progressive crossover jazz a/k/a "fusion", and 2) it sounds like the ultimate soundtrack to "THE SEVENTIES!" Deodato mined this style (funky keyboard jazz, mostly versions of popular tunes) for a number of decent albums in the golden decade (including the top ten smash hit discofied version of "2001", the well-known Strauss theme from the Kubrick movie), but Deodato 2 has long been my favorite of his records. Indeed, it might be my favorite release on the CTI label; it's just a damn fine listen. In case you're wondering about some of the other frequently-heard backgrounds on the show (more used vinyl gems also retiring from regular rotation): the first break of the last hour is usually "Bubbles" (1975) by Herbie Hancock  (what I think of as the "Venus Flytrap Theme", hey baby!); the final air breaks usually feature tunes from Warm Wild & Wonderful: The Now Sound of Tony Mottola Featuring The Groovies (1968 Enoch Light-produced magic and the "Groovies" are really The Free Design); right before the "3:30 epic set" you often hear "spy jazz which starts with a crazy moog" which is of course "Ironside" (1971) by Quincy Jones (the theme from the TV show Ironside); and in recent months I have often used "Grazing In The Grass" by Hugh Masekela for the very first break of the show (though I think I'll keep that one since it's newer!) Some other regulars in recent years have included tracks from An Astromusical Odyssey (1971) by "Sounds Galactic" (John Keating) and Enoch Light Presents Spaced Out (1969).
