"Black Oak Arkansas" by Black Oak Arkansas (1971)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Black Oak Arkansas  "Black Oak Arkansas"  1971 (USA)
Black Oak Arkansas was a pioneering "Southern Rock" band from the town they eventually named themselves after. When they started out in the 1960's they were probably the only psychedelic hippie band in all of Arkansas, and apparently lived an outlaw existence there (allegedly the band members received twenty-year prison sentences in absentia and spent some time on the lam until the sentences were suspended); at the end of the decade they moved to the nearest major music center of Memphis, Tennessee and released their first album under the name The Knowbody Else. Following on the heels of the Allman Brothers Band's rise at the beginning of the 1970's, the newly rechristened Black Oak Arkansas adopted a louder, almost heavy metalish attack to the blues-and-gospel approach of Southern rockers and thus paved the way for Lynyrd Skynyrd who debuted two years later. BOA is also notable for being the orignal three-guitar Southern rock band (a pattern followed by Skynyrd as well as Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws), and one of the earliest groups of any kind with a three-guitar attack (Blue Oyster Cult debuted the year after Oak; only Moby Grape seems to have preceded them). And then there's the singer: the notorious Jim "Dandy" Mangrum, who makes Captain Beefheart sound like Frank Sinatra, and whose stage antics were like those of a primordial David Lee Roth (except Diamond Dave didn't play washboard solos in concert!) The self-titled debut could be BOA's best release, featuring two of their signature songs in the mystical epic "Lord Have Mercy On My Soul" and the self-explanatory sexboogie "Hot And Nasty." Other highlights include the heavy rocker "I Could Love You", instrumental jam (featuring the washboard!) "When Electricity Came To Arkansas" and an old 1950's chestnut called "Singing The Blues." Though personally, I am a big fan of their first live album which also includes "Nasty" and "Electricity."
