"The Allman Brothers Band" by The Allman Brothers Band (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Allman Brothers Band  "The Allman Brothers Band"  1969 (USA)
Southern Rock begins here; sure there had been other Southern rock stars (like, duh, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Little Richard, Fats Domino, etc.) but by the late 1960's there was a "hip scene" which looked askance at Southerners in general. The Allmans developed a hip, yet distinctly Sourthern, style which proved that you can be a hippie even if y'all speaks with a drawl. Which is to say, Allmans were basically a more blues-steeped version of the Grateful Dead: a tribal/family group with by a brilliant guitarist (actually two of them; Dicky Betts was always overshadowed by Duane Allman) and a penchant for epic improvisations. Their debut album was the first of only two-and-a-half studio albums they recorded before Duane's untimely death in a motorcycle accident; though not a big hit at the time, it includes concert staples like the psychedelic jazz/blues classic "Dreams I'll Never See" and the ferocious "Whippin' Post".
