"Sin After Sin" by Judas Priest (1977)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Judas Priest  "Sin After Sin"  1977 (UK)
We're featuring a lot of devily metal for Halloween, and the classic album is a landmark heavy album of the 1970's. Like many of their early 70's peers, Judas Priest began as a group inspired by the heavy/proggy riffage of Led Zeppelin and the glammy operatic vocals and shiny stage outfits of groups like Uriah Heep and Queen. On their debut LP the combination was unfocused but intriguing, and for their second album they created a truly original and unique album of baroque proggy-glammy-heavy rock, though a lot of it still wasn't really "metal" music. For their third album, the elements of their early sound began to gel into a new approach to heavy rock that proved highly influential by the 1980's: the riffing distilled from "heavy blues" (pentatonic scales) to "pure metal" (chromatic scales), the more baroque and psychedeic prog-inspired moves turned into gothic hellscapes, and their silky clothes replaced by nothing but black leather. Though the refinement would continue over the next few albums until reaching its apex with British Steel in 1980 (almost Ramones-like in it's simplistic devotion to headbanging riffs), Sin After Sin is arguably the album where Judas Priest first became an icon of HEAVY METAL.
