December 21 is Frank Zappa Day (at least in my book), and this year that date would have been his 75th birthday. Sadly, 2015 also marks the death of his widow, Gail. One of the many unique facets of Zappa's career is that he always maintained ownership of his recordings (during a time when many artists didn't even own the rights to their own compositions). After his death, Gail incorporated the Zappa Family Trust to administer re-releases of Zappa's catalog and new output from the vault of unreleased tape FZ left behind. ZFT remains a family business, with youngest son Ahmet now taking the reigns of the company, while elder son Dweezil leads the Zappa Plays Zappa band, recreating Frank's music on stages around the world (this year's tour featured the excellent One Size Fits All in its entirity, and was the best show I've seen this group play so far). Anyway, this year's annual Zappa Day Classic Album is one of the final releases from his original group, The Mothers Of Invention, in fact it came out months after the original MOI had officially been dissolved in 1969. Like the best Zappa records, it seamlessly blends studio and concert recordings into that magical, maximalist classical/-jazz/rock sound that only he created. Bookended by a pair of greasy doo-wop pachuco rock "flop singles", the meat of this album are the extended instrumentals of the "Holiday In Berlin" suite on side one and mostly-live "Little House I Used To Live In" on side two.
