"Volunteers" by Jefferson Airplane (1969)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Jefferson Airplane "Volunteers"  1969 (USA)
Paul Kantner and Signe Toly Anderson both passed away on January 28, 2016. They were both original members of the Jefferson Airplane, one of the iconic radical groups bringing the New Sound in the late 1960's. Signe (sig-nee) was the first female lead singer of the group, though she left after their debut album to raise a family, and was replaced by the notorious Grace Slick, formerly of another San Fran psych band called The Great Society. Kantner was the rhythm guitarist and "third singer", usually providing harmonies behind Anderson/Slick and the male lead singer, the band's founder and original leader Marty Balin. When the band started around 1965-66, the idea of groups focusing on their own original material was just beginning, but by 1969 anything else was considered corny. Being the most prolific songwriter in the band, Kantner therefore rose to become something of a de facto leader, alongside the most popular member Grace (they also became a couple and raised a child). Volunteers is something of a high-water mark for the band, having been recorded the spring before and released in the fall following the famous Woodstock music festival, this record's themes (anti-war, pro-sex, anarchy, ecology, profanity) document the cutting edge of hippie youth culture right before things fell apart for good. Kantner's contributions include the anthemic "We Can Be Together" which opens the album, "Wooden Ships" the primordial Yacht Rock classic co-written with Crosby & Stills, and the titular track, co-written with Marty Balin. It would be two years before JA came out with another album, and by then Balin and drummer Spencer Dryden were gone, Jack and Jorma were focusing on their side band Hot Tuna, and for some reason the group also added a sixty-year-old blues violin player. After a final live album in 1973, the Airplane permanently became the Jefferson Starship (a name which Kantner first used on his 1970 solo/supergroup album) with Kantner permanently in command up until that group's final album in 2008.
