"Bad Moon Rising" by Sonic Youth
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sonic Youth "Bad Moon Rising" 1985 (USA)
Sonic Youth's second full-length album was a key milestone in their career, as they began to move away from "no wave punk noise" into more atmospheric sonic terrain. Except for the driving closer "Death Valley '69", this isn't really a "rock" album per se, though there's no other genre that would have it. The shadowy American gothic dreamscapes of this record are unique among Sonic Youth's output. It is one of those magical, alchemical moments in music that the band probably couldn't recapture even if they tried.
