"Sextant" by Herbie Hancock 1972
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Herbie Hancock  "Sextant"  1972 (USA)
This may be the finest jazz fusion record ever recorded by anyone not named "Miles Davis."  In fact I first heard this album playing in a record store, and asked the clerk "who did this new Miles remix?"  I was surprised to learn that it was neither a modern remix nor a Miles Davis record, but a Herbie Hancock album from 1972.  It sounds like it was recorded decades later however, due to Patrick Gleeson's bleeping sequencers and synthesizers and a mix that's heavy on reverb and stereo panning, resulting in an  otherwordly sound that's closer to 1990's "trip hop" than 1970's fusion.
