Hawkwind is one of those groups who did what might seem obvious -- combining the acid freakouts of early Pink Floyd with heavier guitars -- but managed to come up with something unique that has never been equaled.  X In Search Of Space was their second album, the first one which firmly established their tribal space metal groove.  Perhaps the group's secret was that their bassist for this album was Dave Anderson, just back from West Germany where he had been the only non-German member of the legendary heavy krautrock band Amon Duul 2.  After Anderson left, they replaced him with Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, and got even heavier!   Few bands have established a cult following to rival that of Hawkheads -- they even have their own summer rock festival called Hawkfest, this year featuring a special reunion with Sir Lemmy!  Official website.
