Sonny Sharrock was one of the greatest unsung guitar geniuses of all time. His style sounds like no one else, but was an influence on everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Sonic Youth. He's mostly known for his work as a sideman for Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Mann and Miles Davis (uncredited on the Jack Johnson album), but he did make a small handful of albums as a leader, the first three being collaborations with his wife Linda. She's a singer who could perhaps be described as "the Black Power version of Yoko Ono" -- so as you can imagine their version of "jazz" sounds like nobody else's! Their final recording was this funk-fusion gem from 1975, which was probably intended to be a more commercial recording, and which Sonny supposedly disdained in later years. But the addition of electronics and funky beats hardly makes this album a sellout -- it's totally crazy man! Sonny died suddenly in 1994 just as his career was on the upswing -- one of his last projects was recording the theme music to Space Ghost Coast To Coast. Sonny's official website.
