"A Tribute to Jack Johnson" by Miles Davis (1971)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Miles Davis "A Tribute to Jack Johnson" 1971 (USA)
This was Miles' third electric studio album, and his third completely different approach to jazz fusion.  On 1969's In A Silent Way, he built up tranquil "cathedrals of sound" around Joe Zawinul's electric piano lines.  Next on the landmark Bitches Brew released in 1970, he put together a huge studio band with as many as three percussionists and three electric keyboards at once plus a phalanx of horns.  For this album, he scaled back to a more pure rock-and-roll lineup;  the power trio of "Mahavishnu" John McLaughlin (lead guitar), Michael Henderson (bass) and Billy Cobham (drums) keep the riffs flowing, while Miles (Trumpet), Steve Grossman (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (farfisa organ) and Sonny Sharrock (uncredited second lead guitar) take turns blowing over the top.  This music was recorded for the soundtrack to a documentary about early 20th century boxer Jack Johnson (one of Miles' heroes), and is one of his most "visual" albums -- the music really does "sound like" a boxer bobbing and weaving and throwing punches.  Miles kept following his electric muse for another 5 years before he went into a health and drug abuse induced early retirement.  McLaughlin and Cobham went on to form The Mahavishnu Orchestra, releasing their debut album later in 1971.
