"Signals, Calls and Marches" EP by Mission of Burma (1981)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Mission of Burma  "Signals, Calls and Marches" EP  1981 (USA)
All new releases on the program this week, so I decided to choose a contemporary band for the CAOTW.  Mission of Burma was founded in 1979 and was one of the quintessential American "indie rock" bands -- or at least they would have been, except they came along a few years too soon!  The scene and venues that would support all those great bands like Husker Du, Meat Puppets and Dinosaur jr didn't really exist yet, so they broke up in 1983 after failing to have much impact (though they have always been heroes in their hometown of Boston.)  Amazingly, three of the orignal members (the ones who write songs and play instruments -- the fourth guy was basically their soundman) reunited in 2002 and Mission of Burma has been active ever since -- and ironically more successful in this century than the last.  This EP was their second record (following the 7" single "Academy Fight Song / Max Ernst") and song-for-song it's still their best.  Includes the classic track "That's When I Reach For My Revolver".
