"Spirit" by Spirit (1968)

Spirit was a unique and interesting band from the sixties.  Though generally considered part of the West Coast psychedelic scene, I think their real importance was their role as originators of "jazz rock" (they were a key influence on Steely Dan even!)  Keyboardist John Locke (also a famous philosopher, Irish poet, and a character on TV's Lost) and famously bald drummer  Ed "Mr. Skin" Cassidy were the two jazz musicians in the band, while youngsters Mark Andes (bass), Jay Ferguson (lead vocals) and Randy California (lead guitar, Hendrix disciple and Cassidy's stepson) rounded out the original lineup. 
Here's a groovy (if low quality) video for Spirit's lone Top 40 hit single, "I Got A Line On You" from their second LP of 1968, The Family That Plays Together.  And here's a live clip of the 1978 version of the band playing their hippie anthem "Nature's Way", from yet another masterpiece Spirit album, 1970's Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus.
