"Mainstream" by Quiet Sun (1975)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Quiet Sun  "Mainstream"  1975 (UK)
Back at the end of the 1960's, Phil Manzanera played guitar in a band called Quiet Sun, who never released any records.  Then Manzanera hooked up with Brian Ferry in the outrageous camp/art/glam/trash band Roxy Music, which also originally included a weird elfin fellow known simply as "Eno" on synthesizers.  By 1975 (Brian) Eno had established himself as a solo artist of note, and Manzanera was also ready to branch out.  So the original line up of Quiet Sun reunited with Eno behind the boards and they finally put out their first and only album, a delightful prog-psych throwback which sounds like little else being recorded in 1975.  At about the same time, Manzanera also released his solo debut Diamond Head (also producted by Eno) which is as forward-looking as Mainstream is out of time (you can hear early whispers of what Eno would do a few years later as producer for Talking Heads and U2.)  And in 1976, Phil & Brian also formed the nucleas of art-prog supergroup "801"  (including former members of Matching Mole and Curved Air!) who played three concerts and released one album, 801 Live -- this group's repetoire consisted mainly of tunes from Mainstream, Diamond Head and Eno's solo albums (plus weird covers of the Kinks and Beatles.)
For this week's video clips, first here's Phil Manzanera playing the title track from his solo album "Diamond Head" live.  And here's two clips of Manzanera and Brian Eno back in the days when both of them were members of Roxy Music:  "Remake/Remodel" and "Ladytron".
