"Horses" by Patti Smith (1975)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Patti Smith  "Horses"  1975 (USA)
Last week during the show a listener called in and requested Patti Sith's version of "Gloria", so I figured this album would make a nice CAOTW.  Patti Smith was a key figure in the transition from the psychedelic/progressive rock era to the punk/new wave era -- before becoming a famous solo artist, she wrote songs with Blue Oyster Cult!  The combination of extended garage rock rave-ups and poetic lyrics on her breakthrough debut album earned her the nickname "the poetess of punk" (though Johnny Rotten also sneered that she was just "a hippie with a tambourine.")  Smith continues to straddle the line between old and new schools of rock these days -- the latest album from this "punk" icon included covers of Jimi Hendrix and Jefferson Airplane.
Here's a great video clip of The Patti Smith Group in the early days, doing the title track from this album "Horses".  Patti's only American Top 40 hit single to date is "Because The Night" (co-written with Bruce Springsteen?!)  And here's a recent clip of Patti doing the most famous tune from her debut album, a version of Van Morrison's classic garage anthem "Gloria" live in 2009.
