Moby Grape "Moby Grape"  1967 (USA)
Moby Grape's "San Francisco Summer of Love" debut album is among the most heralded "unheralded" LP's of the psychedelic sixties.  Much like Love's Forever Changes album, Moby Grape failed to sell much when released in 1967, but over the years has developed a strong cult following.  It's easy to see why the band had such high commercial expectations -- with all five members singing and writing songs, and a powerful three-guitar line up, the group had chops and style to spare.  However the record label's promotional strategy of releasing five singles simultaneously (one featuring each member, more or less) failed bigtime -- they put forward 10 of the 14 songs on the album for radio, and thus none of the songs broke through and became a hit.  Another thing that may have worked against Moby Grape was that they specialized in extremely tight, short songs at a time when the San Fran scene was into stretching out and jamming.  Finally, the album being quickly withdrawn in order to airbrush out the drummer's "middle finger salute" on the cover also did nothing to help the band's sales or relationship with their record company.
Here's some rare video footage of Moby Grape performing several of their non-hit singles on television: "Omaha" and "8:05" and also "Hey Grandma" and "Sitting By The Window".  Plus, here's a very groovy clip of Strawberry Alarm Clock in the movie Psych-Out  --- oh wow, maaan!
