"When I Was Born For The 7th Time" by Cornershop (1997)
Cornershop  "When I Was Born For The 7th Time"  1997 (UK)
I've been playing a lot of new releases on the show this year, so for the CAOTW this week let's look into the not too distant past.  Cornershop is a "British Asian" pop/rock combo led by Tjinder Singh, and has been one of my favorite UK groups ever since I saw them open for Stereolab on their Emperor Tomato Ketchup tour.  Cornershop's set climaxed with a trance-inducing acoustic two chord sitar rock chant in Punjabi that seemed to last forever and was also one of the catchiest tunes I'd ever heard!  ("Juliander Shere" from their 1995 album Woman's Gotta Have It.)  Their next album to come out was this one, which caused a minor sensation in "indie rock" circles and was chosen by Spin magazine as the Best Album of 1997.  Whereas their earlier material was mostly simplistic guitar rock with Indian flourishes, on When I Was Born they became much more eclectic and caught a case of the funk.  Only two more albums have followed to date, both solid collections of guitar rock mixed with dance beats, sitars and bilingual lyrics (with the fun titles Handcream For A Generation and Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast.)
Cornershop scored their biggest hit in their home country with Fatboy Slim's sped-up remix of "Brimful Of Asha" from this album.  The band's original guitar-oriented political indie punk style can be seen in this 1994 video for "England's Burning".  The 2002 album Handcream For A Generation includes a classic rocker with the unlikely title "Lessons Learned From Rocky I to Rocky III".  Next here's a lovely tune in Punjabi from their most recent album: "Free Love", and finally since they were once linked to the 1990's "Britpop" movement, here's their cover of a classic by the founders of the Britpop style: "Waterloo Sunset" by The Kinks.
