We're winding up reportage of Austin Psych Fest 2011 this week.  Of all the great artists who played the Fest this year, the one I was most looking forward to AND the one whose performance impressed me the most was Spectrum (they did not disappoint!)  This is the group founded by Peter "Sonic Boom" Kember after the demise of the legendary British "shoegazer" band Spacemen 3.  While the other key member of that band, Jason "J. Spaceman" Pierce, went on to found the more popular group Spiritualized, Sonic Boom's projects have remained resolutely underground and deeply psychedelic.  A big part of the original shoegazer aesthetic was a focus on ultra-minimalist drones, and nobody has gotten more mileage out of one/two/three-chord songs than Sonic Boom.
Here's a video of the "hit" from this album, "How You Satisfy Me", and Spectrum performing the classic Spacemen 3 tune "Revolution".  And here's a brief clip of Spectrum blowing minds live at Austin Psych Fest;  some other artists who performed at the Fest  include Cloudland Canyon, Daughters of the Sun, The Cult of Dom Keller and Crocodiles.  And here's a bit of Festival ambience from Austin's Seaholm Power Plant.
