"(Untitled)" by The Byrds (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Byrds  "(Untitled)"  1970 (USA)
The Byrds were one of the greatest groups of the 1960's.  With their combination of Dylan-inspired poetic lyrics and jingle-jangle rock guitars, they were as close as any band got to being "America's answer to the Beatles."  I've been meaning to add one of their LP's to the hall of fame for a long time, perhaps part of what has kept them out so far is choosing which one of their many classic albums to induct first.  (Untitled) was the Byrds's ninth album, and their only double LP.  The first half of the set was recorded live in concert and is mostly made up of new versions of their early hits, including a sixteen minute jam version of "Eight Miles High."  The second disc contains some of their best studio material, including a number of songs which were composed for an unfinished "country rock opera" called Gene Tryp (an anagram for Peer Gynt, on which the story is based.)
This album produced one of the band's last hit singles "Chestnut Mare" (one of the Gene Tryp songs.)  And here's a taste of what this lineup of the group sounded like in concert jamming on "Eight Miles High".  Among the other leftover animal-themed groups on the show this week are Germany's hard rock supergroup Scorpions and Neil Young's backing band Crazy Horse.
