BIRTHDAY SPECIAL
FOR
Pledge Drive!

Paul McCartney is 69 years old on June 18th

(Sir Paul McCartney and your host Dave 3000 share a birthday)

"Revolver" by The Beatles (1966)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Beatles  "Revolver"  1966 (UK)
You know it's my birthday, and Paul McCartney's too yeah!  One of the best albums Sir Paul was ever involved with was this gem from his little quartet from Liverpool.  This was their seventh UK album in an amazing five years (though Capitol records chopped their LP's up to make ten albums for the US market -- the original American release of Revolver lacked three songs from the UK version and was a mere twnty-eight minutes long!)  Their most high-tech recording to date, Revolver was the key transitional record in The Beatles' career, as R&B-based old fashioned rocking & rolling began to be replaced by something more . . . psychedelic.
The Beatles stopped touring around the time this album came out, and they never performed many of these songs outside the studio.  Instead they started making promotional films (early "music videos"), such as this one for "Rain", a classic non-album B-side also from 1966.  The A-side of that single was "Paperback Writer", one of their many international #1 hits.  Next here's Paul years later performing one of his classic tunes from Revolver"For No One".  McCartney's second official solo album from 1979 (most of his records from the 1970's were technically by his band Wings) has just been reissued as a deluxe CD/DVD, and includes another #1 hit "Coming Up" (with a particularly memorable pre-MTV video).  And here's "Silly Love Songs", a flashback to the hazy 1970's when Paul McCartney & Wings were one of the biggest bands on the planet.
"Experimental Jet Set Trash & No Star" by Sonic Youth (1994)
2nd Bonus CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sonic Youth  "Experimental Jet Set, Trash & No Star"  1994 (USA)
Since it's my annual birthday show, I always throw in a second bonus Classic Album of the Week.  Sonic Youth may be my favorite band that I've actually followed during their career (as opposed to groups like The Beatles, whom I love, but they broke up before I was even born!)  A notoriously arty underground "noise rock" band founded in the early 1980's, SY achieved a certain degree of fame during the "grunge" era of the early and mid 1990's.  This underrated gem from 1994 is my favorite of their albums from the period when they were "popular".
This was the first Sonic Youth album in over a decade for which they did not tour (bassist Kim Gordon was pregnant at the time), and so most of the songs on this album have rarely if ever been performed live.  But they did play "Bull In The Heather" on Letterman, and here's a concert performance of "Starfield Road".
