HAPPY HALLOWE'EN

. . . and Pledge Drive!

"Sacrifice" by Black Widow (1970)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Black Widow  "Sacrifice"  1970 (UK)
It's Hallowe'en week (and still pledge drive), so this week we have a selection of occult rock from the psychedelic era.  The Rolling Stones seem to have originated "occult rock" around 1968 with their Satanic Majesties LP and "Sympathy For The Devil" track, but the darkness really flourished after 1969 with the dawn of heavy metal and the doomy seventies, culminating in the global success (and limitless influence) of Black Sabbath.  Another UK band that was often compared to Sabbath in the early days was Black Widow, whose debut album Sacrifice is full of black mass and witchcraft themes, but has a more organ-driven eldritch sound that is quite unique.  Their later albums were not as witchy, yet still failed to translate into mainstream pop success (unlike their American counterparts Coven who started out extremely satanic but later scored a hit single with "One Tin Soldier", the theme song from the classic counterculture flick Billy Jack).
Black Widow had an elaborate stage show to go with their elaborate concepts, so there is pretty good video footatge of them preserved for the ages:  here's "Come To The Sabbat" and "Attack Of The Demon".  Here's what the conceptually similar Coven sounds like -- their debut album was called Witchcraft Destroys Minds And Reaps Souls (1969) and includes a reenactment of an entire black mass!  Other notables from the occult scene include the internationally famous Black Sabbath, and the resolutely underground Pentagram (founded in 1971 and still at it today!)  Some modern practioners of the "doom" sound include the Canadian flute-driven metal band Blood Ceremony, and Jex Thoth who are based right here in Madison (though they have never played a show in town!)
