The Un-Valentine's Show
"Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother & The Holding Company (1968)

CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Big Brother & The Holding Company  "Cheap Thrills"  1968 (USA)
Janis Joplin is an iconic rock legend, and with good reason.  She was one of the first female rock superstars, and her free-spirited style broke the mold for women in rock (she wore PANTS and hardly any makeup!)  But of course the main reason she will be remembered is her stunningly powerful voice.  Originally Janis was merely one of several lead singers in a psychedelic San Francisco blues band called Big Brother & The Holding Company;  their first album was released to little acclaim in 1967, but that summer they blew the crowd away at the Monterrey Pop Festival and when their second album Cheap Thrills came out in 1968 it went straight to #1 and by the end of the year Joplin left them to go solo.  But tragically, she only completed one more album before dying of a heroin overdose (her final album Pearl was released posthumously).
Here's Big Brother performing "Ball & Chain" live at Monterrey Pop, which was Janis' big breakthrough moment.  Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot of footage of Janis when she was with Big Brother, though as soon as she went solo she became a superstar -- here's two classic TV performances, "Get It While You Can" and "Raise Your Hand" with Tom Jones!  Finally, a latter-day clip of Janis singing Big Brother's biggest hit "Piece Of My Heart" in Germany -- despite her reputation as a dour blues singer steeped in pain and suffering, as you can see she actually spent a lot of time smiling and boogying with the audience.  Finally, a revealing interview with Janis.
