"The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" by The Incredible String Band (1968)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Incredible String Band  "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter"  1968 (UK-Scotland)
The Incredible String Band was one of the leading lights of British Folk music in the 1960's (I hesitate to use the term "folk rock", as that was more of an American thing, though some of the British groups -- notably Fairport Convention -- did include some rock instrumentation).  Like Bob Dylan, they made acoustic sounds cool for the hip young mod generation, and tied counterculture concerns to age-old "folk" themes.  The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter was the group's third release, and widely hailed as one of their masterpieces.  At this point they had evolved beyond their original folky themes to incorporate all sorts of world and ethnic influences, and developed a decidedly psychedelic edge, culminating in the epic track "A Very Cellular Song".
Here are a couple of fine video clips of ISB in the 1960's, "The Half Remarkable Question" and "Painting Box".  Another of the most legendary British Folk groups was Fairport Convention (originally including Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny), and since it is St. Patrick's Day this weekend, of course here's the greatest Irish rock group of all time Thin Lizzy (although their classic lineup actually consisted of two Irishmen, a Scotsman and an American).  Also on our trans-Britannic journey this week:  the great unsung Welsh band known simply as Man.
