"Metal Box" by Public Image Ltd (1979)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Public Image Ltd  "Metal Box" (aka "Second Edition")  1979 (UK)
This week's Classic Album is one of the most heralded underground albums of the punk/new wave era.  After quitting his role as "Johnny Rotten" of the infamous Sex Pistols (a band who were in truth very much manufactured and just as fake as The Monkees), John Lydon reclaimed his real name and founded a more artistically successful group.  Though they've never had the commercial or cultural impact of the Pistols, Public Image was something of a guiding light for the whole 1980's DIY "indie punk" scene.  PiL combines krautrock experimentalism and reggae grooves with the uniquely passionate "punk rock" wailing of one of the West's most unlikely popstars, and it is widely agreed that this is their finest record.  Originally entitled Metal Box, because it was packaged as a set of 45rpm records that came in a metal box, the album has also been released in a more conventional double LP or CD format as Second Edition.
Public Image made one of my favorite appearances on American Bandstand back in the day (trainwreck TV!), and here's another notorious appearance on UK television.  But even before that, prankster svengali Malcolm McLaren put together a fake band to prove controvery sells more than talent:  ladies and gentlemen, here's the Sex Pistols!  But the skinny Irish kid with the bad teeth who sang for this band was secretly a fan of prog and kraut rock, and that's the secret ingredient behind PiL.  Take for example the glorious 70's German group CAN, whose singer seems like one of Johnny's key influences.  And by the way, Can has a new album of LOST TAPES just released this month!
