"Saint Dominic's Preview'" by Van Morrison (1972)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Van Morrison  "Saint Dominic's Preview"  1972 (UK - Northern Ireland)
Today is Van Morrison's 67th birthday.   This Belfast-born singer songwriter is a true original who has always seemed to me a bit out of place and time.  His classic albums of the 1960's and 70's produced plenty of pop hits, yet they are a uniquely sophisticated blend of soul, jazz, celtic and folk music with heavily "poetic" lyrics -- and generally popularity eludes artists who are this eclectic.  The factor that makes all the difference is probably his distinctive voice, extremely effective at soulful R&B shouting but with a rapturous, obsessive dedication to The Poetic Muse that very few singers can muster.  Although it lacked any big hits, his best selling album is Saint Dominic's Preview, which is a perfectly balanced collection of short soul numbers and epic stream-of-conscious odes.
Here's Van performing the title track from this week's classic album live in 2008.  One of my all time favorites by Morrison is also on this album, "Listen To The Lion".  But Van's breakthrough came back in 1964 with the greatest garage rock anthem ever written:  "Gloria".
