Sly Stone's 69th Birthday!
"Dance To The Music" by Sly & The Family Stone (1968)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
Sly & The Family Stone  "Dance To The Music"  1968 (USA)
Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart) celebrates his 69th birthday today.  In 1967 he put together one of the greatest bands of the era, and indeed this was a family act -- brother Freddie (guitar) and sister Rose (vocals and second keyboard) are Sly's siblings, Larry (bass) is their cousin, and trumpeter Cynthia Robinson bore one of Sly's children.  There really is nothing tighter than a family singing and playing together, and the title track of their second album is a timeless classic featuring intricate interplay between all the singers and musicians (the two overlap brilliantly: Sly's voice is greasy like his organ, Freddie twangs like his gi-turr, Cynthia is brassy as her trumpet, and of course Larry sings bass).  The album also features a landmark 12-minute psychedelic suite "Dance To The Medley" and rousing political anthem "Don't Burn Baby".
