"Younger Than Yesterday" by The Byrds (1967)
CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Byrds  "Younger Than Yesterday"  1967 (USA)
The Byrds were a pivotal band of the 1960's for several reasons:  the ultimate L.A. scenesters (especially the irrepressible David Crosby), they merged the two hippest strands of the mid-sixties by "Beatlizing Bob Dylan songs".  Originally they were a beat group with tight harmony singing doing the protest music of Dylan and Pete Seeger, but soon developed their own ecclectic style with forays into jazz and raga (the legendary single "Eight Miles High") and going beyond folk music into full-on country & western, reaching a hillbilly peak when Gram Parsons joined the band in 1968.  But the country influence reared its head even earilier, as exemplified by bassist Chris Hillman's contributions to this album (none of which we heard on the show this week!)  Also, Crosby is pushing his jazzy songwriting style further forward into psychedelia, and leader Roger McGuinn turns in arch ironic numbers like the leadoff hit single "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star" (with trumpet solo by Hugh Masakela).  Younger Than Yesterday is a brilliant batch of mismatched songs that sound right together and a seminal album of 1967.  However, this lineup was not to last -- having already lost founding member Gene Clark (vocals, tambourine & songwriter) during the recording of their previous album, by the time they released the followup to YTY they had lost David Crosby as well (he wrote a couple tunes for Jefferson Airplane and started fooling around with scenester pal Steve Stills, before meeting Graham Nash . . . )
